The relationship between categories and genres

The Internet is new, and although websites are rarely placed within genres, they are frequently categorised. It is difficult to speak of a website without referring to its category (e.g. e-commerce, personal home page etc.). So much so that a large part of this essay is used to look at the relationship between website categories and genres. As will be seen, it may prove difficult to categorise many websites that coexist within a category, into a genre. However, a pattern can be discerned in some cases.

Yahoo categories have been used in this essay. This is for several reasons. Firstly, they are self-categorised (Yahoo, 2000): the submittor chooses the category. Secondly it is one of the earliest and by far the most important search tool (Media Metrix, 2001), and thirdly it has been extremely influential on other search tools.

See Appendix A: Some Yahoo categorisations for more detail.
