This site is about Nathan Windisch, born 14 weeks premature, he stayed at the Neonatal unit for 15 weeks.

Mon 26th July
Day 322
10M 18D

Nathan had his first fish today. It was a spot of trout with some pasta, all ground down. We bought the lad some 7 month food, but it's all lumpy and he's not quite ready for that yet.

We're trying to introduce Nathan to the word "No", as in "don't eat the woolly ball (that any parent who doesn't want to get sprayed when nappy changing uses)" or "don't pull mummy's glasses off". Nathan thinks it's all great fun.

Today Nathan got closer than ever before to turning onto his front. He was trying to grab mum's book, and reached out with both hands. Several times he made it onto his side only to roll back onto his back. Soon.

Sun 25th July
Day 321
10M 17D

Today was just too hot. Childhood may be a time of endless summers, but that's not necessarily a good thing for a baby. The fan runs at night and the lad's in just a nappy during the day. Nathan got a little fractious by afternoon as the heat gained the upper hand.

We're offering Nathan a bottle of water during the day between feeds. Sometimes he's just thirsty, which is beginning to be different from hungry as Nathan moves on to solids as his primary source of nutrition.

Sat 24th July
Day 320
10M 16D

Dad looked after Nathan all day today. It's a matter of getting used to the lad's routines, then you've a better idea when he's tired rather than hungry.

Nathan was spotted with his foot in his mouth. All the way up to the first "knuckle" of the big toe.

All of a sudden the lad's feet are being used to move and push things. For instance, during tonight's bottle feed in bed Nathan's right foot came up to hold dad's feeding hand.

Fri 23rd July
Day 319
10M 15D

You'll believe a baby can sulk. Sometimes it's possible to make a mistake with the lad, feed him something he's not too keen on, or allow him to knock his head on something. As an alternative to crying Nathan sometimes just stares at you. He'll refuse to react to you, or to smile, no matter how much you try. It looks like a sulk to us.

A week or so ago Nathan had the last of the expressed breast milk that had been made while he was in hospital. Mum saved it for an occasion when he'd definitely drink it all, and when it wouldn't need to be adulterated with Abidec or anything else. After a couple of sucks on the bottle the lad looked up at her with a look of recognition. He knew what he was drinking.

Thu 22nd July
Day 318
10M 14D
We all went for a swim at the local leisure centre today. The water was nice and warm and Nathan loved it. He also loved all of the activity - all the other babies and kids. We could hardly hear him shout and squeal with pleasure over all the noise.
Wed 21st July
Day 317
10M 13D

We've noticed how Nathan is holding his head better these days. The lad's got an odd shaped head because of all that time spent facing to one side but recently we've seen him use the other side by choice.

Nathan now also sometimes lies with his head pointing straight upward. He used to lie to one side and look sideways at whatever was above him.

Tue 20th July
Day 316
10M 12D

Nathan's either got heavier or longer because he's now too close to the ground when riding in his bouncer. The lad's also getting too big for his cot. Not only do his arms wave around a disturbing distance above the top of the cot, but he now sometimes lies with his legs over each side.
