This site is about Nathan Windisch, born 14 weeks premature, he stayed at the Neonatal unit for 15 weeks.

Mon 1st November
Day 420
1Y 1M 24D

5:50am GMT is 6:50am BST, and so the day started rather early for us. Nathan's such a punctual boy, always requiring his meals at exactly their allotted time, that it might take him a while to become acclimatised to the new time zone.

By 9:30 Nathan was rather hungry, so we tried toast again. This time with honey, and what a difference that made. Usually if Nathan's a bit tired when he's eating, his instinct is to reject food. The lad almost dozed snuggled up to the honeyed toast.

Nathan's got a toy perspex box with a hole about six centimeters (2½ inches) in the top. We've been encouraging him to put things into the box, but the lad usually hits a spot just behind the hole, and the smaller toy just bounces away. Today Nathan got the hang of it, and we ran out of small objects to test the lad's skill. He even tried to stuff his chameleon beany toy (several sizes too large) into the hole.

Sun 31st October
Day 419
1Y 1M 23D

Nathan went swimming with mum today. The lad's learned to splash and he's gone splashing crazy. Bathtimes have got a whole lot wetter.

One of Nathan's many birthday presents was a dinosaur o a string. Today, for the first time, Nathan pulled the dinosaur all the way towards him with the string.

Sat 30th October
Day 418
1Y 1M 22D

Nathan had his first taste of beef today, in an unflavoured cassarole that was liquidised yesterday. He treated it like the usual rat poison.

We've taken delivery of a saturation monitor. We'll monitor the lad sometime next week. We hope it'll be for the last time.

Fri 29th October
Day 417
1Y 1M 21D

Apart from a tooth induced crying session at 11:00ish Nathan had a tremendous night.

When we pick Nathan up he's started to put his hands on our shoulders and pull himself up.

We went swimming again. Nathan loved it. He's slowly getting the hang of the spider crawl, which involves gripping onto the side of the pool and moving crablike sideways. It's one of the criteria Nathan needs to get his duckling badge. The badge is probably bigger than his trunks.

Thu 28th October
Day 416
1Y 1M 20D

Phrase of the day was "Ladle ladle ladle".

For Nathan, a book is both a teething ring and a way of covering and uncovering things every time he turns a page. It's something that fascinates him.

The cold is still there, although in a less virulent form. Nathan's still a bit sniffly, and the chesty cough is still there. Oh may his hernias hold at every cough!

A new game involves putting things into, and taking things out of, a tray. This can hold the lad's attention for quite a while.

Nathan was weighed today at 7.02kg (15lb 7½lb). The health visitor was pleased with Nathan's progress, so much so that his next visit will be voluntary.

Wed 27th October
Day 415
1Y 1M 19D

Oh those teeth. The right upper first incisor is overtaking the left upper second. It's still affecting Nathan's appetite, but not as badly as before. He's back up to 5-7 cubes per meal.

We tried feeding the lad slices of peach today. It should have made an ideal finger food, but Nathan was not enamoured. Perhaps another day.

Tue 26th October
Day 414
1Y 1M 18D

Yet another variation of peek-a-boo. This time Nathan takes an object, lifts it to his eyes, and drops it whereupon we say peek-a-boo. The lad still laughs as hard as before.

We're up to three teeth now. All upper incisors. Nathan's hands are always at his mouth, his lips are pressed together as if they're sore, and the lad's appetite has suffered. The next weigh-in is on Thursday. Let's hope for a clear increase.
