This site is about Nathan Windisch, born 14 weeks premature, he stayed at the Neonatal unit for 15 weeks.

Mon 30th October
Day 784

The rains stopped Nanna from vising today.

We did have some company though: we babysat a little ten month old friend. Nathan was very good most of the time, but had his worst tantrum yet when he got tired.

We also had a five word sentence, although we can't now remember what it was.

Sun 29th October
Day 783

Today we went to visit Granny and Adrian in Wembley. After lunch we went to "Fantasy Island", a children's activity centre. Nathan had a great time.
Sat 28th October
Day 782
2Y 1M 21D
Nathan was standing around, larking around, when he decided to put his football on the coffee table. He was a little too far away so, while holding the ball with both hands, he took a step forward. His first step and he doesn't know he did it.
Fri 27th October
Day 781
2Y 1M 20D
Granny came today. Nathan showed her how well he can stand. After she'd gone home he managed to stand for 30 seconds, with just a couple of reaches out to maintain balance. He laughed all the way through.
Thu 26th October
Day 780
2Y 1M 19D
We went to the Cintra park Halloween party. The kids were dressed up in scary costumes, and we played games. It was great fun.
Wed 25th October
Day 779

Today we went to the doctor to ask about the lad's eczema. The doctor explained that the redness on Nathan's legs was caused by an infection. He's prescribed "Oilatum plus" which contains an antiseptic. We're also going increase the number of times we apply emolient (Epaderm) from twice to three times daily. It's not a big problem, but it's a bit itchy for the lad.

In the afternoon we went to Bekonscot model village with some friends. Nathan really enjoyed it, especially the trains, whichh run all the way through the village.

Tue 24th October
Day 778
2Y 1M 17D

Today we went back up to the John Radcliffe for Nathan's check up. At his last inspection the surgeon said that one of the testes had not dropped and that surgery might be necessary.

Well it's still up there, and so the surgery will be scheduled for sometime at the end of the year, or in the new year.

The reasons (that I can remember) for doing the operation are as follows.

  • Fertility will be affected by having the testes too high in the scrotum. It may be that the testes is already damaged, but the lad will still be fertile enough with one
  • The probability of a tumour would be increased (fortyfold, from very slight to slight) if the operation is not done.
  • The testes will be better protected from damage if it can swing out of the way if kicked.
  • Cosmetic - Nathan would be different at school.

The operation would be done in the morning, with an overnight stay in the best case. The procedure is to divide and remove the fibres that prevent the testes from descending.

The worst case would entail three or four nights in hospital. The operation itself should take forty five minutes.

In the worst case Nathan would have the testes attached to stitching which would exit the scrotum, and be attached to his leg for a few days. Nathan would be under strict bed rest in this case. This would happen if the testes did not descend by themselves. It is not expected that the lad would have to undergo this treatment, but it's the worst that could happen.

On a lighter note the lad uttered a four word sentence: "Open the curtains daddy".
