Aldbury  Buckinghamshire (formerly Hertfordshire)

Meaning: old fort Place-names of Great Britain and Ireland.

The village green has a duck pond and still retains the stocks and whipping post. A 15th century monument surrounded by a stone screen can be seen in the Pendley Chapel of the perpendicular style church. An avenue of trees stretches across Aldbury Common to the Bridgewater Monument. This was erected to the pioneer of Britain’s Canal system, the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater The AA touring guide to England: 1980.

An old village off the A41. Mrs. Humphrey Ward lived (1892 - 1920) at (Great) Stocks, visible behind the Tudor House and barn of Stocks Farm. The 18th century House with its long lime avenue, chosen for its seclusion, has a walled garden where she wrote. A brutal killing which took place in the village was woven into her novel Marcelle (1894). She entertained large parties on Sundays; Henry James was a visitor and her young relatives Julian & Aldous Huxley spent many holidays here. In 1908 she moved into her cottage, which she had let to friends, including George Bernard Shaw, while Stocks was repaired and altered. Mrs. Ward died in London but is buried in the churchyard near the north-west corner of the church The Oxford literary guide to the British isles.
