Hampden
House was rebuilt in 1754, and was the home of John
Hampden for many years. It now houses a girls’ school.
Hampden opposed Charles I’s Ship-Money Tax, fought for
the parliamentary army, and died after the battle of Chalgrove.
He is buried in the churchyard. The church dates mainly
from the 13th century and contains Hampden family monuments .
