Meaning: enclosure of Waecel’s (Wacol’s) people The meaning of English place names.

Several Georgian houses still stand in Watlington, and the settlement is situated at the foot of the Chiltern escarpment. The market hall dates from 1664. Watlington Hill is a splendid 800 ft viewpoint lying 1.5 miles to the south-east and the modernized and moated 14th century house of Shirburn Castle stands 1 mile to the north-east The AA touring guide to England: 1980.
